Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
